Chris's Learning Story
Today was a delightful day in the sandpit, where I had the pleasure of observing Chris engage in rich and creative play with his friends. His imagination took flight as he meticulously sculpted a magnificent dinosaur out of sand. Watching him focus on the details really highlighted his ability to represent his ideas through dramatic play, emphasizing his growing sense of agency and independence.
As Chris interacted with his peers, I was impressed by the way he invited others to join in his adventures, fostering a spirit of collaboration and camaraderie. Together, they transformed the sandpit into an expansive world filled with exploration and creativity. The highlight was undoubtedly Chris’s construction of a custom G50 Ford Ranger track, which showcased his problem-solving skills as he designed the course to accommodate various challenges for his friends to navigate. This not only demonstrated his ingenuity but also underlined his ability to incorporate others’ ideas into his play, reinforcing his social skills and contributions to the group.
Throughout their play, Chris and his friends communicated enthusiastically, sharing ideas and encouraging one another. This interaction supports Te Whāriki’s vision of communication and connection within the community, as they negotiated roles and shared their visions for the sandpit world.
This experience enriches our programme’s focus on exploration and creativity, encouraging Chris to embrace challenges and develop resilience as he builds and creates. Today’s play was not just about the sand; it represented Chris’s exploration of identity and belonging in his learning community, where he felt secure in expressing himself and participating fully. I am immensely proud of Chris for his creative contributions today, which greatly enriches our learning environment.

"Today in the sandpit, Chris was able to play nicely with his friends at the end of it, had built a dinosaur out of sand and had also built a custom G50 Ford Ranger track. Which is pretty impressive for a four year old. Other than that, he did a bunch of other interesting things and he played nicely within a ring. Craig."
