Chris's Learning Story
As I stepped outside into the warm embrace of the sun, I was greeted by the joyful sounds of play in the sandpit. There, I observed our vibrant learner, Chris, alongside his friends John and Gareth, deeply engaged in a world of imaginative play. With their small hands, they meticulously shaped and sculpted what they described as their very own dinosaurs. Each creation was more elaborate than the last, embellished with twigs and stones that adorned their prehistoric giants. It was a delightful sight to see how they worked together, their laughter mingling with the sound of sand cascading through their fingers.
This experience is a beautiful example of the Wellbeing (Mana Atua) strand. Chris felt secure and confident, thriving in the supportive embrace of friendship as they collaborated and shared ideas. I watched as they communicated, each child articulating their thoughts and desires, showcasing their growing skills in Communication (Mana Reo). I could see the sense of Belonging (Mana Whenua) blooming amongst them, reinforcing their connections as they built a shared world filled with stories.
As the sun began to dip closer to the horizon, their play came to a gentle close. I noticed the way Chris and his friends concluded their day, sharing handshakes and cheerful promises to play together again tomorrow. This act of friendship highlighted their understanding of Contribution (Mana Tangata), as they learned the importance of cultivating positive relationships and working collaboratively.
Looking ahead, I see wonderful opportunities for Chris to continue his exploration and creative expression. I plan to introduce further materials and resources that can expand his imaginative play, such as books about dinosaurs or tools that allow them to create more complex structures. I hope to embrace their interest by facilitating a project that combines art, stories, and outdoor discovery—their own adventures waiting to unfold! It was pretty awesome.
