chris's Learning Journey

Chris spent a long period in the sandpit this morning, working with a variety of containers and digging tools. He carefully filled a large plastic bucket with damp sand, patting the top down firmly with his spade. After testing the stability of the sand by tapping the side of the bucket, he carefully tipped it over to create a foundation. He then spent several minutes positioning smaller shells and stones around the base of his structure, explaining to me that he was building a house for the beetles he had spotted nearby. He worked with great focus, occasionally adjusting the placement of his materials to ensure they stayed within his designated area.

This activity highlights Chris’s developing ability to plan and execute a goal-oriented task. He demonstrates patience as he manipulates physical materials to match his intended design. By creating a specific habitat for the insects he observed, he shows empathy and a growing interest in the natural world. His persistence in refining the structure reflects his confidence in his own problem-solving abilities and his comfort in taking the lead on an independent project.

To support Chris, I will provide additional natural materials such as bark, twigs, and leaves to his play area. I plan to encourage his interest by reading a book about insect habitats with him, which will help him connect his physical construction work with his expanding knowledge of the creatures he is helping.
